Traumatic Brain Injury

Over 320,000 service members returning from Afghanistan or Iraq have received brain injuries, according to a 2008 study by the RAND Corporation. This section provides information about organizations that offer supports and services for service members and veterans who have a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

America's Heroes at Work

Provides employers and the workforce development system with the tools needed to help returning service members who have a traumatic brain injury and/or post-traumatic stress disorder succeed in the workplace. This is a project of the US Department of Labor and is focused toward service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Read more: America's Heroes at Work

Brain Injury Association of Ohio (BIAOH)

Provides resources and assistance about rehabilitation opportunities and community supports to individuals with a brain injury who live in Ohio. For more information: Brain Injury Association of Ohio

Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center

Provides services to active duty military, their dependents, and veterans with TBI through medical care, clinical research initiatives, and educational programs. The Center develops and provides advanced TBI-specific evaluation, treatment and follow-up care. For more information: Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center

Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury Outreach Center

Provides information and referrals to military service members, veterans, their families and others with questions about psychological health and traumatic brain injury. It is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The outreach center can assist with everything from routine requests for information about psychological health and traumatic brain injury, to questions about symptoms a caller is having, to helping a caller find appropriate health care resources. Medline Plus: Veterans and Military Health

Provides online resources about mental health issues that affect service members, such as the effects of shrapnel and gunshot wounds, lost limbs, post traumatic stress disorder, and head injuries. For more information: Medline Plus: Veterans and Military Health

National Center for Injury Prevention and Control

Provides online information and resources about TBI. The information is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For more information: National Center for Injury Prevention and Control

National Resource Center for Traumatic Brain Injury

Polytrauma System of Care

Provides services to veterans and returning service members with injuries to more than one physical region or organ system, one of which may be life threatening, and which results in physical, cognitive, psychological, or psychosocial impairments and functional disability. Special Journal Issue on Traumatic Brain Injury

Provides information about TBI and polytrauma, including the diagnosis and treatment of TBI and the clinical characteristics of military personnel returning from combat and several health care models that are providing care and support to them and their families.
