The IDEA Behind AT: Essentials of Assistive Technology

March 2, 2012

9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This session provides practical, hands-on training that will help participants discover how sensory experiences and assistive technology can support teaching and learning for all students with disabilities.

Two concurrent sessions are offered. You may register for one, or both sessions. Free lunch is provided if you attend both sessions.

In one of the sessions, participants will learn about the areas of function that assistive technology can support, including how it is properly "considered" and written into the Individualized Education Program (IEP). They will examine the legal mandate for assistive technology and how it is funded. This session will include hands-on exploration of websites that support student learning, with a focus on free resources.

In the other session, participants will learn about Snoezelen, a multisensory philosophy that uses an environment designed to encourage exploration. The creation and use of sensory environments will be explored, including how to use lights, music, tactile experiences, and vibration. Examples of how to structure the day and classroom/home for success, as well as providing sensory experiences outside a sensory room will be discussed.
