Veterans with Disabilities: Family Support Resources

Family support resources help families that are struggling with family stability, such as dealing with the emotional impact of deployment, and assist families that provide care to a child or other family member with a disability. The following are family support resources for veterans and their families.


Resources for a family member with a disability

Air Force Aid Society - Respite Care

Provides a grant for respite services to active duty Air Force families who have a family member with special needs who lives in the household. The program is intended to assist those who cannot afford to pay for respite services. For more information: Respite Care

Department of Defense Education Activity - Special Education

Provides information about the Department of Defense's special education program. For more information: Department of Defense Education Activity - Special Education

Exceptional Family Member Program

Provides comprehensive and coordinated community support, housing, and educational, medical, and personnel services to families with special needs. This is a mandatory enrollment program for soldiers on active duty who have a family member with a physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual disability. Exceptional Parent Magazine - Military

Provides articles and information, written by Exceptional Parent Magazine, about latest news and issues affecting military families with a child who has a disability. For more information: Exceptional Parent Magazine - Military

Marine Corps Exceptional Family Member Program

Provides assignment coordination and family support services to Marines who have a family member with a disability. For more information: Marine Corps Exceptional Family Member Program

MilitaryHOMEFRONT - Special Needs

Provides resources for spouses, children, or dependent parents of military personnel who have a diagnosed physical, intellectual, or emotional condition and assists the service member during the assignment process. For more information: MilitaryHOMEFRONT - Special Needs

Navy Exceptional Family Member Program

Assists sailors about services for family members with a disability during the assignment process. Special needs include any special medical, dental, mental health, developmental or educational requirement, wheelchair accessibility, adaptive equipment or assistive technology devices and services. Operation Autism

Supports U.S. military families who have a child with autism by providing resources, services, and support. For more information: Operation Autism

Special Restorative Training (US Department of Veterans Affairs)

Provides special restorative training and counseling to eligible spouses and children to help them overcome or lessen mental or physical disabilities. This is a part of the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program of the US Department of Veterans Affairs. For more information: Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program

STOMP - Specialized Training of Military Parents

Provides support and assistance to military parents who have a child with a medical condition or disability. For more information: STOMP - Specialized Training of Military Parents

TRICARE

Several options are available for service members or a family member with a disability or serious illness. Options may include behavioral/mental health care, durable medical equipment, home health care, hospice care, skilled nursing facility care, and case management. Also provides Educational Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorders services that are not covered under basic TRICARE coverage, and only partially covered through the Extended Care Health Option. Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program (US Department of Veterans Affairs)

Provides services to children of Vietnam veterans who were born with Spina Bifida or may have other covered birth defects. Family Assistance (Ohio)

Lists Ohio-specific and other resources for families of veterans. This information is provided by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. For more information: Family Assistance

Blinded Veterans Association

Offers spouses and dependent children of veterans who are blind a chance to continue their education through a scholarship program. For more information: Blinded Veterans Association

Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act

Law signed on May 5, 2010 that will ensure that families of veterans severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan receive comprehensive, coordinated financial and other support that will enable them to provide these service members with homecare. For more information: Wounded Warrior Project

Coaching into Care

A telephone service of the VA to provide assistance to family members and friends trying to encourage their veteran to seek health care for possible readjustment and mental health issues. For more information: Coaching into Care

Military Projects at Zero to Three

Provides training, support, and resources about the impact of trauma, grief, and loss on young children (birth to three years old) of military families, particularly those families that experience trauma and loss as a result of a service member's deployment. Military HOMEFRONT

Provides Department of Defense Military Community and Family Policy program information, policy and guidance designed to help troops and their families, leaders, and service providers. For more information: Military HOMEFRONT

Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)

VA Caregiver Support

An initiative of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that provides services to support caregivers of veterans. This program offers a National Caregiver Support Line that is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The toll-free number for the support line is 1-855-260-3274.
