Work Incentives Seminar Event (WISE)

Social Security's disability program rules about work are complicated and can be confusing. Do you know about and understand Social Security's work incentives? Work incentives are Social Security's rules that make it possible for people with disabilities receiving disability benefits to explore work options and still receive benefits until they reach their work goals.

Social Security offers a Work Incentives Seminar Event (WISE) to discuss these and other concerns about Social Security beneficiaries with disabilities who want to return to work. The purpose of this tutorial, which is adapted from the WISE presentation, is to let you know about some of these work incentives.

However, each person has a different situation and additional information can be provided to you based on your circumstances. At the end of this tutorial, you will be provided with information on how to contact the Legal Rights Service to speak to someone who can help you.

How to Use the Tutorial

Before you begin, here are some tips on how to use the tutorial.

The tutorial is divided into five sections. On the right side of the screen, you will see an area titled "Topics." Under the Topics heading, the sections are listed by number and title. Each is a link to the specific section. If you want to skip a section, click on the link of the section you want to go to. However, we strongly recommend that you complete all sections of the tutorial.

Near the bottom of each page, there are links that allow you to go to the previous page or to the next page. When you are finished with a page, choose the "Next" link found on the bottom right side. If you need to go back to the previous page, choose the "Previous" link found on the bottom left side.

At the end of the tutorial, you will be asked to complete a quiz. We encourage you to complete the quiz since it reinforces the important points discussed throughout the tutorial. However, if you would like to skip the quiz, scroll to the bottom of the page and choose the "Next" link found on the right side.
